Have often read in Yahoo discussion group, foreign lady who married to J man and have been living in J for years, feel annoyed or irritate when local ask/ say " wow, you can use chopstick", "you can eat natto/miso", wow, you can speak J well. They feel that they are not suppose to be treated this way when people have live in a place for over 10 years but still get the treatment of a foreigner. I dont feel anything about this comment maybe because i have yet to live in a foreign land and yet to understand of being treated like an alien.. but again i think is common and i myself will comment the same when i see foreigner here doing something local is doing, like "wow! you can eat durian", wow, you can speak Malay.. blah.. even i commented my bf "wow! you can eat asam laksa".

yea tat part of u commenting i think many have tend to do it...but imagine living a land when u gets the look for looking foreign and everything u do ppl comment...its a different story all together...it gets to a point where too much of anything is ducking irritating...u need to experience too feel it...u will be there

As for me, I don't mind too, and feel nothing when locals say "wow, you can eat this & that...or your japanese is good, ..." Personally, i think, it is because they don't know me or they know not much about foreigners. In fact, i am glad that they talk and from that we made conversation if they want to know me further. I also "wao!" at my foreign friends in Msia who eat laksa, durian or when they suddenly talk in local dialect. But, for what i see, foreigners are usually a bit sensitive, what do you think?!
as of now, i dont mind, i just take it as a compliment but as cath says maybe i have to be there to know the feeling. Im type of cincai la, anything boleh x kisah kind of person..so now x feel anything, now at least

hmmm... i think it depends on the situation. sometimes ppl treat me like jap oso i don't like esp at work...
